Fehu
|
The Rune Fehu is linked to monetary wealth and the intensity of flame. In ancient times, cattle were considered a sign of wealth. The more cattle that some one, or the clan, owned, the more wealth they had. There is also a downside to wealth. That being jealousy. Jealousy can lead to anomosity, hatered, theft and violence. Through out the ages and cultures, it has been taught to be genourous with wealth, to avoid these potential problems. The teutonic peoples were no different. According to one myth, kin slaying and the creation of a dragon were caused by greed. The power that this Rune has is from Muspellshiem -the realm of the Fire Giants and one of the forces of creation. Because of this and the burning emotions that wealth can cause, the Rune is tightly tied to fire. Fire is both benifical and dangerous. Heat, warmth, cooking of food are all benifits of flame. But when this flame becomes out of control, serious damage and potential loss of life can happen. According to the Teutonic creation myths, the universe started with two primal forces -ice and fire. And the first creature that came into being was a cow (Audhumbla). Again, here is another relation to cattle. The Gods and Goddesses most tied to Fehu are Frey and Freya. Both are fertility and prosperity Gods. |
